Daffodils in Food Dye

We put 3 daffodils in food dye at about 9:30 this morning.

The first daffodil was in red food colour, the second in blue and the third had its stem cut so it could have part of the stem in red and part in blue.

What do you suppose happened as the daffodils drank the food dye?
