Green Schools

We had a great talk from Tiernan in relation to Green Schools today.
Our theme at the moment is TRAVEL.
We learned all about the benefits of travelling to school on foot, by scooter or by bike, using park and stride or using the bus.
Most of all we enjoyed the video on cycling.
We are going to try hard to travel to school using some of these green travel ways.
Our class might even win the Golden Boot! (the class with the most children walking/scooting/biking or busing to school will win this each month!)

Cochaillín Dearg in Kinvara

Results will be announced on Nuacht an Iarthar on Radio na Gaeltachta
on Friday's 6 o'clock news.
Bhí an-lá ar fad againn inniu igCionn Mhara.
Rinne muid ár ndícheall agus bhí muid ar fheabhas ar fad!
Thanks to Kinga for the lovely pics.
We had an absolutely wonderful day i n Kinvara Community Centre.
Our acting was superb and we really really enjoyed the day.
Before we left for Kinvara we changed into our costumes and had our make up done for us.
We were so excited.
We had a wonderful time in Kinvara and we really enjoyed watching two other plays:
Saighdiúirí  Soldiers by 6th class from Oranmore boys school
and
An gréasaí agus na leiprecáin  The elves and the shoemaker from 4th class in Ballinasloe.
Many thanks to Ms. Flannery and Mrs. Daly for coming with us today and helping us all day long, and to all who helped out with the make up and the moving of sets this morning.

Learning about sound

We are learning all about sound.
Today we learned about the pitch of a note.
We are able to make sounds with our bodies.
Some of us used our mouths, some used hands and some used legs to make lots of interesting sounds.
We know that musical instruments make music by blowing, by plucking, by shaking or by banging.
Tomorrow we might classify some instruments in these ways.

Today we tried using our sense of hearing.
We tried to match cards with objects in a tub just by listening to the sounds they made.
We were really good at this.
Next we discovered that short instruments make high sounds
but longer instruments make low sounds.
This worked for the pan pipes and whistles below,
but also with straws (small straws make high sounding whistles, while longer straws make lower sounding whistles),
and also with elastic bands...
small elastic bands make high sounds while bigger elastic bands make lower sounds.
We finished up today's lesson on sound using string telephones.
This was really fun.
Two people can have a conversation with a set of string telephones, or you can join more than one set together for a conference call!

Learning about time

We are learning to tell the time, both analog and digital.
We use little clocks to help us.

Weighing with sugar and margarine

Today we did lots of estimating and measuring with 1kg=1000g weights (sugar)
1/2kg=500g weights (2 blocks of margarine) and
1/4kg=250g weights.
We even used our weights and a balance to test and see that the bag of sugar and the margarine were indeed the weights they said they were!
