Road Safety Lesson

We had a visit from the road safety authority (RSA).
They helped us learn how to stay safe on our roads.
If we are walking we will stay on the paths, watch out for cars and bicycles and wear high viz vests if we can.
If we are on our bicycles or on scooters we will always wear a helmet, and also wear a safety high viz vest if we can.
When we are travelling in the car we will remember three things starting with a B:
Belt (we will wear our seat belts)
Booster (we will use a booster seat until we are 150cm tall and also 36kg in weight)..that's the law in the EU!
Back seat (We will ride in the back seat of the car while we are still not adult sized, because we could be hurt if the airbag came on in a crash).
Thank you for helping keep us safe on the roads.
We were each delighted to receive a safety licence!

Outdoor hurling

We had our hurling class with Mark outside today.
We are getting really good at all the drills.

Advent wreaths

Advent is a time to prepare for the birth of Jesus.
We have an advent wreath in class.
It has 3 purple candles on it (for hope, love and peace) and a pink candle (for joy) and a white candle (for the birth of Jesus).
We light one candle a week until Christmas time.
Today we made some advent wreaths of our own.
They will look very nice when they are finished.

How strong is air?

We know that air is all around us but we were wondering if air is very strong?
We tested this by using a bottle and a ping pong ball.
If you fill a bottle with water and then put a ping pong ball on top instead of a cap, what do you think will happen if you turn both up-side down.
Will the ping pong ball fall, causing all the water to splash all over the place?
OR
Will the ping pong ball stay where it is and act as a stopper, keeping all the water in the bottle?
Surprisingly this is exactly what happens.
Why?
The water in the bottle wants to fall to earth (gravity is pulling the water) but the air under the ping pong ball pushes it up against the bottle keeping all the water in the bottle.
UNBELIEVABLE!
Try this yourself at home and be amazed!

Passenger boats

Today we made passenger boats.
We used marla.
A ball of marla just sinks every time but still teacher asked us to try and make a floating boat from a sphere of marla.
We saw how big heavy shells can float if they are the right shape.
We designed boats using a similar shape.
When we could get our boats floating, we loaded them with passengers to see how many passengers each boat could take before it sank.
