Learning about the Ukraine

Today we had a wonderful presentation about the Ukraine from Svitlana, a mum in our class.
Svitlana arrived dressed in her absolutely gorgeous national costume.
We just love the beautiful embroidered flowers on the costume.
They are so pretty.
We like the Ukrainian flag.  The blue colour represents the sky, while the yellow represents fields of wheat.
We were surprised that the Ukraine is such a big country, and that the population is 10 times bigger than the populaion of Ireland!  The whole population of Ireland would fit in Kiev, the capital of the Ukraine!
We heard about the money, and were surprised that we would need 25 notes to make just one euro!
We just loved looking at pictures of the local foods and of the countryside....
but what we loved best was seeing all the interesting things that Svitlana brought for us to see.
We saw books written in Ukrainian, and we thought the alphabet book was especially interesting.
We saw dolls in national costume, and we saw a regal mace (which was used long ago as a lethal weapon!)
We were shown the flag, hand decorated soup mugs,
Here is a picture of a Ukrainian town, and the very dangerous looking mace.
We saw decorative belts and head pieces.
We really loved having a chance to see and handle all these interesting Ukrainian objects.
Here is what the money looks like.
We loved looking at photos of the family taking part in a local international festival this summer.
Thanks so much Svitlana for your wonderful presentation.
Ukraine sounds such a beautiful and such an interesting country!
