Monday, February 8th, 2010 In class we are talking about different countries, different cultures, and children from different nations. It is very interesting. We have been looking at flags, and different clothes. In Ireland we talk about St. Brigid on February 1st. If we were Japanese children we would have been talking instead about Setsubun no hi on February 3rd. This is when one member of each family will put on an ogre's mask (the oni) and will wait outside the door. Another family member will have a nice woman's mask. This one is for good luck. Then the family will throw beans at the oni and say "oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi" which means bad luck out, good luck come in. Teacher had the masks and the beans in school so we could see exactly what to do. (We were also talking about "ponaire draíochta", magic beans, in the story we saw and read today - Jack and the Beanstalk).
