Maths Trail

We had a great Maths Trail today. We had teams of 4 with one paper holder, one recorder and two lookers in each team. We had to answer lots of interesting questions. Some of the questions were really easy but some were more challenging. It was a lot of fun and we got a chance to practise the maths we learned this year.

Awards from a Scientist

We are having a really exciting day. Dr. Malachy Thompson is a scientist, a chemist. He came to school today to do some really interesting experiments with us. He also presented us with our second Green Flag, our Award of Science Excellence plaque, and our Discover Primary Science certificates. Thank you so much - we had a wonderful day. Dr. Thompson's show was so exciting. He did some exciting explosions with lighter fluid, showed us how the colour yellow can be made to disappear, made soap bubbles with oxygen explode, showed us ultra violet light and how it makes white clothes and even teeth shine, showed how camphor salts wriggle and squirm in water, until you touch the water with your oily finger, made hydrogen whistle and pop, blew up a hydrogen filled balloon, made a hydrogen-peroxide volcano, and made a can with water explode its lid.Science is really exciting!

Visit to the Fairy Fort

We went for a walk to Renmore's Fairy Fort. We know that if you go three times round it then you can make a wish. We ran round it lots of times so we hope to have lots and lots of wishes coming true.

An African Drama

Ms. Lavery's and Ms. Cunningham's classes did a wonderful play about A Zebra Who Had No Stripes. Well done to the wonderful singers and actors in these classes. What a wonderful performance.

Summer Art

Len (our sets and props expert) has very kindly given us a bag of used lighting acetates which we can use for art - don't you just love recycling? Today we made really nice paintings of beach scenes. We used the acetates as sails for our boats, as sun umbrellas, and even as an ice-cream. We wanted the sand in our pictures to look and feel like sand so we mixed white, orange, and yellow paint with sand from our sand pit. The sand on our pictures is perfect! There will be a nice surprise for our Dads when they see their Father's Day cards on Sunday. Have a great weekend Dads.

Sports Day

All the Senior Infant classes had sports day today. The weather was perfect - dry and sunny with some clouds. Our three races were the sprint, the potato and spoon race, and the sack (pillowcase) race. Everyone did their best and a great day was had by all.

Each of the classes had a boys' and a girls' heat in each race, and the three fastest children went forward to the senior infant final. The finals were very exciting and each class is very proud of our winners.

Games

Jordan from our class is moving to live in another country. We will be able to see his new school on the internet. He can watch our school site too and see what we are doing every day. Today he brought in a great game "Twister" and we had a chance to play it.

Under the Sea

Now that the summer has come, we are looking forward to spending time on the beach. We know lots of animals and fish that live in the seas. Look at the lovely finger and sponge printed pictures we made of "under the sea".

School Tour to Athenry

Three of the senior infant classes went on school tour today. The weather was cloudy but nice and we had a wonderful time. We went to Athenry on 2 busses - a big coach and a small mini bus. We all wore our seatbelts.
At the Athenry heritage centre we split into two groups of thirty students. Our group started with archery lessons. Some of us were really good and got bull's eyes or burst balloons. Even the teachers tried. Next we ate lunch, ran in the maze and had a tug of war competition.
After this we all dressed up in old Norman costumes and were told lots about living in Norman times. We got to see lots of old Norman things too. It was a really exciting talk, and there were lots of chances for us to join in.We went to Athenry castle too, and went in to the basement. We would have liked to explore the whole castle, but we just didn't have enough time. We had a wonderful tour!
You can see more photos of our school tour on Ms. Flaherty's page at: http://scoilchaitrionajnrmsflaherty.blogspot.com/2009/06/school-tour-to-athenry-heritage-centre.html
