Class rules

We had a great talk about class rules today.
Here are important ones for us:

Occupations

Ewa is a mammy in our class.
Today she came to tell us all about her busy jobs.
Ewa has 4 jobs and each one sounds really interesting.
Ewa uses lots of Maths and Science in her jobs every day.
One of Ewa's jobs is a shopkeeper (we know that this is a siopadóir in Irish).
For this job Ewa has to wear the uniform we see here.  She likes this job because she can do lots of maths: adding, subtracting and counting.  Being a shopkeeper means you meet lots of interesting people every day.
The next job that Ewa has is chef.  In this job she uses lots of science and has to know all about heat, mixing, measuring.  It sounds like she makes delicious food every day.
Ewa is also a carer and really enjoys helping people who need help eating and dressing.  She especially likes chatting to older people.
The fourth job that Ewa does is a mammy.  This is a very important job and it is her favourite job of all.
Thank you Ewa for such an interesting talk today.

Harvesting

Today we were talking all about how bread is made.
We learned about harvesting, turning wheat into grain then into flour and finally bread.
Here is an interesting video we watched.

Planting spider plants

Teacher has three big spider plants in the class.
These spider plants have baby spider plants growing out of them.
Today we planted the baby spider plants so that we have one each.
We will give these plants light (they are on the window sill) and we will water them each PE day.
We hope they will grow well.

Signs of Autumn

A girl from Ms. Crotty's class make a wonderful Autumn shoe box garden.
Today we talked all about the signs of Autumn.
Can you spot the mushrooms? pine cones? crab apples? sycamore helicopters? conkers?
Did you know that blackberries turn green and red before they turn black?
Did you know that conkers fall in an outer shell called a chestnut.
Conkers come from the Horse Chestnut tree.
We have a Horse Chestnut tree in our school.
We will visit it tomorrow if it is a dry day.

Making traffic lights

We have been outside to see traffic lights in operation.
Today we decided to make our own sets of traffic lights.
First of all we talked about the colours of traffic lights, where each colour is placed and what each colour means.  We have learned lots about crossing the road safely, especially with the help of traffic lights.  We can also sing some nice road safety songs.
We have already looked at the sequencing of the traffic lights at our school gate.
Teacher showed us how to fold black paper and then cut semi circles which turn into circles when we unfold the paper.  Cutting out the circles is the hard part.
Next we had to choose some coloured materials for our traffic lights.
We needed the colours red, orange (or yellow if we have no orange) and green.
We also tried various materials to see whether they let the light through (transparent) or blocked all the light (opaque).  We tested this with the light of the projector for the whiteboard.
Felt and coloured sheets of paper didn't work at all because they are opaque.
Crepe paper and tissue paper were a little better, they let a little light through.
Cellophane was the best of all and was extremely transparent.
We used glue to stick on the coloured cellophane and of course we wrote our names on our traffic lights.  Now all we needed was a light source.
We decided to hang our traffic lights on our window and use a natural light source (the sun) to shine through the lights.
Here is what the traffic lights look like on our window.
Our traffic lights also make wonderful shadows on our desks and on the floor (and on Jakub who sits beside the window!)
We are looking forward to designing other traffic lights like these ones made from a toilet roll and coloured tissue!
