Keeping hands and teeth clean

We have been talking about keeping ourselves healthy.

We know lots about keeping our hands clean.

Here's a fun story we saw.

Farm Prints

After our visit to the mobile farm on Friday we decided we would like to make our own farm prints.

We used farm stampers to help us to make nice pictures.

Peg strips

We have new peg strips to help us with our Maths.

Today we were figuring out the number stories for the number 9.

We can see that                        0+9=9                                3+6=9                                                   

We are good at using our new peg strips.

Our class wormery

Grandad John brought us a jar full of nice juicy worms yesterday.

They need a proper home so today we set up the wormery.

We filled the container with layers of soil, compost and sand.

It was like a pattern: soil, compost and sand, soil, compost and sand etc.

Then we all took tuns at adding the worms.

Some were huge, some were tiny, there were lots of them.

We expect them to dig tunnels in their wormery.

After just a few minutes there were no worms left at the top of the wormery.

Why not?

Worms prefer to stay deep down in the soil where it is dark and safe from the birds.

Tomorrow we will take off the cardboard cover and see where the worms went.

This is really exciting!

Ash Wednesday

Today is Ash Wednesday.

It is the first day of Lent.

Lent will last for 40 days (and 6 Sundays) and will finish with Easter.

Some of us will give up things we like for Lent, or we will try and be nice to others.

We got ashes on our foreheads today to remind ourselves that we have come from dust and ashes and that when we die we will become dust and ashes again.

We are alive now.

Now is the time to live like good Christians and to love God and love others.

We will try to be nice to each other, especially this Lent.

We also wear the ashes so other people will know that we are trying to be good followers of Christ.

Learning about Lent

Owl's trip to the post office

We have a surprise parcel ready to send to Israel.

Look at what we put in it!

We have sent badges, flags which we made ourselves, letters, an Irish flag, an Irish banner, tattoos and shamrocks.

We hope our friends in Israel like them!

We were especially proud of Dane, who knew that we needed "3 fivers" change from the €20 we gave in at the Post Office. (Our package cost €5 to post).

When we got back from our trip to the Post Office and our spring walk, we discovered that Dino had written us a note.

Making pancakes

It is Pancake Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, which is the start of Lent and 6 weeks to Easter.

Today we made pancakes in class using

pancake mix (yes, we cheated a little), a pancake maker (still cheating a bit), oil, water, lemon, sugar and a fish slice (lots of us call this a spatula).

Traditionally people made pancakes the day before Lent began because this gave them a chance to use up all their "nice" ingredients like eggs and sugar before they began their 6 week fast in preparation for the great festival of Easter.

We had to add the water to the pancake mix and shake well (we all took turns).

Teacher cooked the pancakes and we ate them with lemon and/or sugar.

They were absolutely delicious.

Our new garden

Kay helps us with our school garden.

She popped in to visit us this morning and to tell us of her plans for the new school garden.

There will be raised beds for each class (we can't wait!) and we will grow our own vegetables, flowers and plants.

We were joking that Kay must be a little potty because of all the pots she uses when she is gardening.

Later today Grandad John came to visit us.

Every year he brings us some lovely plants and some lively worms (for our wormery)
He also told us about when he was a boy.

We loved hearing about how John managed with no electricity but we were really surprised to hear that he had no toilet in his farm house when he was young, and he had to run behind the bushes and use grass instead of a proper toilet and toilet paper.  Yuck, we are glad that things have changed a lot!

We will look after the black current bush and the Curly Kale cabbages,

the primulas, onions, strawberries, the woodbine and the nice green plants with the big leaves.

We are also waiting for some seeds to arrive with the Innocent Smoothie Sow and Grow project.  We can't wait to see them all grow bigger between now and the summer holidays.

Keeping our teeth clean

 Today is a Visit to the Dentist Day for someone in our class.

We had a great chat about keeping our teeth clean and healthy, and teacher read us this interesting story:

Healthy Lunch Award

We are so proud of all our children who have a really healthy lunch each day (and to their parents for providing such a good lunch) .

Well done to Ross today who swapped his orange juice for water, swapped his cereal bar for grapes and who had lovely tasty healthy ham for lunch.

Visit from the mobile farm

What a thrilling day.

We had a visit from the mobile farm.

The animals (and their keeper Claire) came all the way from Cork to tell us about the animals.

We loved hearing about them, but we particularly loved holding and petting the animals.

Acrobatic clowns

This morning we tried balancing our clowns on our fingers.

They kept falling off and landing on the ground.

We know this is because gravity pulls them to the earth.

Then we put coins on each hand of the clown.

Now because of the weights we can get our clowns to balance.

We had a lot of fun balancing our clowns in all sorts of interesting places in our classroom.

Dressing up

Today we took out our dress up clothes and we had a lot of fun dressing up this morning.

We had some great imaginary conversations in our pretend roles.

We love dressing up!

Keeper of the Keys

We play a fun drama game.

The child on the stool is the keeper of the keys.

With his eyes firmly closed, he has to listen out for anyone trying to steal his keys.

Can you steal the keys without being heard?

The Lonely Dragon

We are doing some fun drama activities all about the Lonely Dragon.
He lives in a cave near a village.
He is lonely but he might be dangerous.
Should we invite him to our village fair or not?
What will we say to him?
Should we stay safe and not talk to him at all?
Is it fair that he is always lonely and has no friends?
Such interesting questions!
