Learning about lungs

We really enjoyed testing the size of our lungs.  Some of us were so enthusiastic that we forgot that we are only supposed to take one breath!

Supporting Galway!

Most of us dressed in maroon and white clothes today in support of our hurling team.
We love wearing our headbands - even when we are working!
UP GALWAY!!!

Shells for our nature table

Look at the wonderful shells for our class nature table.
Nature has great treasures for us to enjoy!

Up Galway!

Tomorrow, we are having a 'Maroon and White' day! We are showing our county colours to support the Galway Senior Hurling team who are playing Kilkenny on Sunday in this year's All Ireland Final in Croke Park. All children and staff are being asked to wear maroon and white to school tomorrow if they have it at home. Let's show our support! Gaillimh Abú!!

Occupations: Software Engineer

We had never seen inside a computer before so we found this really interesting.
We also got to play a game on Madeline's laptop using a fun piece of software.
Thank you so much for such a great talk!

Weather men (and women!)

We have a weather-man or a weather-woman in our class each day.
They record the daily weather on the calendar and they read the thermometer each day.
We will take rainfall readings too as soon as we get our rain gauge nailed to the wall.

The Crocodile Pool

We had great fun with a lesson from the Walk Tall programme.
It is called "The Crocodile Pool" and it is a wonderful lesson for getting us to think about our own talents and abilities.
Each of us was a superhero and we had to use stepping stones to cross the crocodile pool.
As we stepped on each stone we had to call out something we are good at.
If we couldn't think of anything our friends helped us by telling us what they think we are good at.
We are all so good at so many things.

We are a talented bunch!

Literacy games

Well done especially to James, who brought the book "Lost and Found" by Oliver Jeffers to school today.
Teacher had been looking for this book, we all have seen the video, and we were all keen to read the story.  It is a fantastic story, as is "The Way Back Home" by the same author.
We love reading books!

Occupations: Doctor

We learned lots about our ears, how they have good helpful wax in them, how we need to use our skill of listening very carefully to all around us, and how we must NEVER put anything into our ears or up our noses.  We heard about grommets, and how kids who have trouble hearing sometimes get a little plastic tube put into their ears to help drain glue from behind the eardrum.  This helps us hear better (but only if we really need them!) Teacher had little plastic beads which look a little like grommets for those of us who have never seen grommets before.
Mr. Keogh needs to wash his hands up to 40 times every day to keep all germs away, and he needs to scrub his hands so well before each operation.  We should all wash our hands after we have been to the toilet, or after we blow our noses or sneeze or cough into our hands, and before we eat.
We saw the light for looking into ears, and we saw what look like ice pop sticks for helping the doctor to look at our tonsils. We also saw what a stethoscope looks like, and how it is used.  We heard about what happens when our tonsils get sore, how they turn red and are sore when we swallow, and about how we would have to eat jelly and ice cream if we have an operation to get our tonsils removed.
This was such a great talk.  It was really interesting, and we had lots to contribute to the chat, because most of us have been to the doctor or optition before.  Thank you so much for such a great talk!

Occupations: Electrician

Occupations: Mammy

We can't remember what it was like to be a baby but some of us are good at helping to take care of our baby brothers and sisters.
This was a wonderfully practical and interesting talk.
Thank you so much Caitríona for such a wonderful talk!

Sorting farm animals

We have a new bucket of farm animals.
We tried sorting these in as many ways as we could.

We sorted them according to colour, according to the type of animal that they were, and according to whether they are birds or animals.  We love sorting!

Occupations: Legal Secretary

We had a wonderful talk today from Tayo.  She is a legal secretary and she told us all about the work lawers and legal secretaries do.  We were especially interested in laws about road safety that keep us safe every day.
Tayo's job sounds really interesting.  Thanks so much Tayo for telling us all about your job!

Perfect Puppy

We had the most adorable puppy in school with us this morning.
She is so well cared for, and she is SOOO cute!
To look after a puppy you must give her food and water, take her for walks and bring her to the vet for injections and when she is sick.

Visit from a Train Inspector

We really enjoyed hearing all about Adrian's job as a train inspector.
Tomorrow we will use our class train set, and we might pretend that we are railway inspectors now that we know all about the job.
Thank you so much for such a great talk!!!

Colour Wheels

We have learned lots about mixing colours.  We know that mixing
red and blue make purple
yellow and red make orange
blue and yellow make green
red blue and yellow make brown.
We painted colour wheels in school today to show the colours mixing.
We will finish our pictures tomorrow and show you what they look like then.

Maths: Sort and classify

Harvesting from our garden

All our fruit and vegetables are 100% organic.
Any fruit or veg we pick in school we also wash, cut up and taste.
We love looking after our garden.
We also planted out our strawberry runners.  We are learning lots about being great gardeners, and we are helping to take care of our world around us.

Our own colour wheels

We made our own colour wheels today.  We can spin these using just our fingers and we can spin these using the motor.  It is lovely to see the colours change as we spin the wheels.  Using the motor gets more spectacular results than spinning with our fingers.
