Planting a school garden
Scoil Chaitríona Junior are thrilled to be included in this year's Medtronic Healthy Living project. Thanks to the Medtronic Foundation in Galway, we are being funded, advised on and helped with the building and planting of our own school garden. The work began in earnest today with our first planting session.
Kay Synott has come to be our advisor. She had a meeting with Brendan Smith (who will help us learn about foods that are good for us, and how to keep ourselves and our hearts healthy) and our teacher. They have chosen a good spot for our garden - in the front of the school, in a lovely sunny spot.
When Kay arrived today she had a chat with our class and Mrs. Newell's class about which fruits and vegetables we should plant and why? We decided not to plant bananas or oranges since they don't grow well in Ireland! We can't plant crisps or chips but if we plant potatoes we hope we can make our own crisps and/or chips.
We helped Kay prepare the raised boxes. We did the smoothing of the compost, making seed drills, planting the seeds, writing the labels, fetching water from the water butt, and watering the seeds. All the while we talked about what seeds need to grow (air, warmth and water), what is counted as a weed (any plant that is growing where it shouldn't be) and how to look after the seeds we planted. We know we should eat 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day. We can't wait to try tasting the ones we planted.
Today we planted potatoes, sunflowers, onions, scallions, carrots and nasturtiums. Next Tuesday we will plant strawberries, spinach and peas. We just love gardening. Thanks Kay and Medtronic!!

Goodbye to Mr. Donnellan
Friday, March 26th, 2010
It is time to say "Goodbye" to Mr. Donnellan, who has been our teacher for the last month. We are very sorry to see you go and we want to say a big "Thank You" for being so nice, and for all the wonderful and exciting things you did with us during the month. We wish you well in your future teaching.

More pottery work
Friday, March 19th, 2010
We love working with clay. Today we did lots of things with clay. We pinched it, squeezed, rolled, squashed, molded, and made clay pinch pots (which we didn't leave to dry this time), and fantastic animals, which will dry on the window sill and which we can paint next week. Have a look at our work:

Watching the Senior School parade
Friday, March 12th,2010
Today the Senior School marching band marched round Renmore. It was really thrilling. We made St. Patrick's Day headbands and went out to watch the parade. We watched it when it started, and again as it finished. The day was cloudy, and much cooler than recent days, but it was still nice. We really enjoyed watching the band. Well done to all in the senior school for putting on such a great parade for us!

Science Open Day
Thursday, March 4th, 2010
We held our Science Open Day this morning.

We held our Science Open Day this morning. We invited our parents and grandparents, teachers from our school and the senior school, our chairman and lots of other classes to come and see all the work we have been doing all year in science. It was a busy morning. Each of us took responsibility for an experiment, and could tell all our visitors about how to do our experiment and how and why it worked. It was a fun but exhausting morning. The Hungry Caterpillar game
Thursday, March 4th, 2010
We played a great dice game with Mr. Donnellan. It is based on the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and it is a game which helps us decide which foods are good for us, and which foods are bad. We learned lots by playing this game.

All about Food
Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010
We are learning all about food, where it comes from, how it grows and which kinds of food are good for us.
Today we tried tasting different kinds of foods - salty, sour and sweet. We tried a sour lemon, salty crisps and sweet jelly worms.
We like tasting foods, but we know not to try anything unless we are with an adult we can trust.
