Learning about Frogs
We had a great talk today - all about frogs.
We heard about the lifecycle of a frog. It was a very interesting talk. We love teaching each other about interesting things.
Art: Umbrellas and Rockets
We did some wonderful art this week. We painted umbrella, then decided that they would be better umbrellas if they were waterproof, so we covered them with a layer of plastic. They look great and are waterproof as well.

We also did a really nice space scene this week. We used marbling ink to turn our plain white pages into lovely patterns, then we cut out these pages into circles to look like planets. We painted or coloured rockets, and stuck these on to our space scene with the planets. They look really fabulous!

The Water Cycle
Thursday, November 5th, 2009
We have been talking about the water cycle. We have been listening to a song about it too. We know that the sun evaporates puddles and a little of the water from lakes and seas. We have left a bowl of water on the window to see if the sun and the heat from the radiator will evaporate it. Teacher drew a black line on the container so we will know when the water evaporates a little.
This is how much water had evaporated by Friday.
Next we tried to make our own water. Each table started with a cup with a little water in it.
The outside of each cup was dry. Next teacher gave each cup two ice cubes. When the ice cubes melted a little some water started being formed on the outside of the cups. This happens because the air around the cup is warmer than the cup with ice in it.
When the warm air hits the cold cup, some of it turns into water droplets (condenses). We were amazed when we saw the water on the outside of the cups. Now we know how to make water!

Snake Spirals
Thursday, November 5th, 2009
We painted snakes on Monday, cut them out and hung them up yesterday, and today we noticed that the snakes hung in the middle of the room didn't move at all,
but the ones near the window were dancing.
We chatted about this for a while, some of us thought that the snakes by the window were just more excited, being able to look out. After a bit of discussion, we decided that the snakes by the window were moving because they were also over the radiator. We know that hot air is coming from the radiator. This air rises because hot air (and steam and smoke) always travels up as high as it can go. The snakes by the window are in the path of the hot air and so they look as if they are dancing. The ones in the middle of the room have no radiator under them, and so they don't move.

Balancing
Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Hurray! We can use our hall again. The class that was in the hall are now in a brand new prefab. We enjoyed our PE class in the hall. Today we started some easy gymnastics. We tried to find lots of ways to balance. Look at the pictures of all the different ways we could balance on our own and in pairs!

We talked about why some kinds of balancing are easier than others. Gravity pulls us down but we can balance easily if we can put our arms out. It is impossible to pick things off the ground or to lift one leg if our bodies are pressed against the wall. This PE class is very scientific too!

Winter tree
Almost all the leaves have been blown off the trees. We made the leaves on our painted tree all fall off too. The tree looks a bit sad in winter.
Colour Wheels
Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

We made nice colour wheel pictures.
We coloured the picture, and then painted the drum. Teacher showed us where to put the red, yellow and blue paints. Then we started mixing colours.
We discovered that red and yellow make orange, red and blue make purple and yellow and blue make green. We enjoyed the mixing.
Someone even discovered that if you mix all the colours together you can make brown. Later in the day we used the colours that we had mixed to paint snakes. Teacher has plans for the snakes. We might be using them for science when we cut them out!
Maths Game
Monday, November 2nd, 2009
We played a good maths game where we had to match up numbers of spots with numerals and number words. Each table had to try and race the others. It was very exciting.
